FAQ

How end-to-end encryption works, what operational data Mango needs, how to verify keys and what happens to backups.

Encryption and chats

First, identify the type of space: a private one-to-one chat is different from an open group or channel.

Are all Mango messages end-to-end encrypted?

End-to-end encryption is used in private chats and private groups. Open public groups and channels are separate spaces; they are not E2EE chats.

Support for individual features depends on the chat type, app version and participants’ devices. See the Security page.

What does “end-to-end encryption” mean?

Content is encrypted on the sender’s device and decrypted on participants’ devices. In supported encrypted scenarios, the server transmits and stores encrypted data only, not message text or the original contents of attachments.

Are photos, files and calls encrypted?

Supported private media and calls use end-to-end encryption. Public posts and public channel content do not become E2EE just because Mango encrypts private spaces.

What if the other person is using an older app version?

Update Mango on both devices. In an encrypted scenario, incompatibility may temporarily prevent a message from being sent or opened.

Server, data and privacy

Content encryption does not automatically hide every detail of communication. The service needs some operational information to deliver messages and run accounts.

Can Mango’s server read my private messages?

In supported E2EE chats, the server receives encrypted content and cannot access message text or decrypted attachments. This boundary depends on the chat type and the supported path in the app.

End-to-end encryption cannot hide content from chat participants or protect it after it has been decrypted on their devices.

What data can the service still see?

To operate, the service may process account, device and chat identifiers; participant lists; message send, delivery and read times and status; and technical connection and security-event information. The exact set depends on the feature.

Mango does not promise “zero metadata.” Learn more on the Security page and the privacy policy.

How is Mango Private different from public MangoConnect?

Mango Private connects to an organization’s dedicated server; its private traffic does not pass through MangoConnect’s public infrastructure. This separation alone does not mean that no operational data is visible.

Content protection depends on end-to-end encryption in the specific supported space.

Does Mango guarantee that no one will ever see my message?

E2EE limits access to content in transit through the server, but cannot protect against access to an unlocked device, malware, screenshots, photos of the screen taken with another device or actions by the recipient.

Keys and devices

Keys help verify a secure connection; they do not verify a person’s identity outside the app.

How can I verify another person’s key?

Compare your contact’s safety number with the one shown by the other person using a separate trusted channel—ideally in person. A match confirms that you have the same cryptographic data for the connection; by itself, it does not prove who is holding the device.

What does a key-change warning mean?

Your contact may have changed or reinstalled a device, or their keys may have changed. Before sending sensitive information, verify the safety number with them through a channel you already know. Do not ignore an unexpected warning.

Does encryption protect me if my phone is unlocked or infected?

No. The app has to display the message to the participant on their device. Use a screen lock, install updates and do not give others active access to your device.

Message history and backups

Protecting conversations and protecting backups are related but separate. Mango uses different methods for standard backups and portable archives.

How does Mango protect backups?

The backup is encrypted on the device before it is saved. A standard backup uses a Mango key stored in the platform’s secure storage; a portable archive is a separate file protected by a recovery secret. The backup contents and encryption key are not sent to Mango’s server in plaintext.

Chat synchronization, standard backups and portable archives are different mechanisms. The interface and availability may depend on the platform and app version.

Can Mango restore a backup if I lose my device and key?

Not always. If you lose the key needed to open a standard backup, the service cannot replace it and decrypt the backup for you. For a portable archive, store the recovery secret separately from the file. Before changing devices, make sure you have a working recovery method.

Do disappearing messages delete every possible copy?

The timer controls when a message is displayed and removed in the app, but cannot erase a screenshot, a photo of the screen, an export or a copy made by another participant.

How is Mango different from other messengers?

There is no single “most secure” ranking: compare the specific chat type, attachments, calls, backup storage and metadata.

A note on boundaries

Mango uses E2EE in supported private chats and groups; public groups and channels use a different model. Telegram Cloud Chats use client-server encryption, while Secret Chats use E2EE and are device-specific. WhatsApp says personal and group messages are E2EE, while cloud-backup encryption is configured separately. LINE enables Letter Sealing by default for supported content types, with listed exceptions. Signal describes E2EE as its standard model for messages and calls.

Mango therefore does not claim to be “safer than everyone else.” Consider the scenario you need and its boundaries.

Still have a question?

Contact support. If you are reporting suspicious activity or a vulnerability, do not send passwords, recovery keys or the contents of private conversations.
